Alight is expanding its onsite solar partnership with global automotive technology leader Lear Corp. through new behind-the-meter solar projects. The expansion features new installations at Lear’s European Electronics headquarters in Valls, Spain, and two manufacturing facilities in Bieruń and Tychy, Poland.
These projects strengthen Alight’s growing portfolio of industrial onsite solar solutions while supporting Lear’s strategic goals to reduce carbon emissions, manage energy costs, and boost operational energy resilience.
Project Breakdown: Spain and Poland
🇪🇸 Valls, Spain (European Electronics Headquarters)
Alight has commissioned a new 1.4-megawatt (MW) solar carport system covering approximately 400 parking spaces.
-
Dual Benefits: Generates clean electricity for onsite operations while providing shaded parking for employees and visitors.
-
EV Integration: The carports cover eight electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
-
Capacity Boost: This project more than doubles the site's solar capacity, adding to an existing 1-MW rooftop solar installation that Alight delivered three years ago, bringing the site's total to 2.4 MW.
🇵🇱 Bieruń & Tychy, Poland (Manufacturing Facilities)
Alight has developed and commissioned rooftop solar installations at both manufacturing plants.
-
Direct Supply: The systems feed renewable electricity directly into factory operations.
-
Economic Defense: Helps Lear lower emissions and shields the facilities from long-term electricity price volatility.
The Business Model: Solar-as-a-Service (SaaS)
All three projects are delivered through Alight’s Solar-as-a-Service model.
How it works: Alight finances, builds, owns, and operates the solar systems. Lear purchases the generated electricity through long-term power agreements.
This model allows large industrial companies to adopt onsite solar with zero upfront capital investment while instantly benefiting from predictable energy costs and reduced carbon footprints.
Leadership Perspectives
-
Josef Chrzanowski, VP of Global Sustainability at Lear Corp.:
"The new carports in Valls, together with the rooftop projects in Poland, demonstrate how we can use our facilities to generate clean power, reduce costs, increase resilience and support our global sustainability commitments."
-
Rob Stait, Managing Director of Alight’s Behind-the-Meter Division:
"This is a strong example of how Alight helps industrial companies unlock the value of their real estate, reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, and build resilience with a long-term, reliable supply of clean electricity."
Summary of the Partnership Growth
With these new installations, the Alight-Lear partnership now spans six sites across Europe, totaling more than 6 megawatts of installed solar capacity. This expansion highlights a growing trend among multi-site industrial companies utilizing onsite solar as a practical tool to decarbonize operations and improve long-term energy economics.
