Aluminum Carport & Patio Cover FAQs

Help Center

We build aluminum carports and patio covers to order, so the questions below cover the real decisions our customers face — from pulling a permit to bolting the kit together. If you don't see your answer, reach out and we'll help.

Do I need a permit for an aluminum carport or patio cover?
In most areas, yes. Permanent structures attached to a foundation usually require a building permit, and rules vary widely by city and county. Before you order, check with your local building department (see our carport permit guide) to confirm setback, height, and footing requirements for your specific lot. We can provide engineering drawings and load specs to support your application, but we cannot file permits on your behalf. When in doubt, consult a licensed contractor familiar with codes in your area.
What HOA restrictions usually apply to carports?
Homeowners associations often regulate color, height, placement, and how visible a structure is from the street. Some require that a carport match your home's roofline or trim, and a few prohibit detached structures entirely. Review your HOA's covenants and submit plans for approval before ordering, since requirements differ from one community to the next. Our color and finish options can help you meet common HOA guidelines. If you are unsure, ask your HOA board for written approval first.
How do I read snow load and wind load ratings?
Snow load is the weight (in pounds per square foot) a structure is rated to carry on its roof, and wind load is the wind speed (in mph) it is engineered to withstand. Your local building department publishes the minimums required for your region, so match or exceed those numbers when choosing a model. Each of our carports lists its rated loads on the product page. If your area sees heavy snow or high winds, consult a licensed contractor to confirm the right rating for your site.
What is the difference between polycarbonate and insulated roof panels?
Polycarbonate (PC) panels are lightweight, let in diffused daylight, and block UV, which suits carports and patio covers where some light is welcome. Insulated panels have a foam or air core sandwiched between aluminum skins, so they cut heat transfer and noise, making them a better fit for enclosed or attached structures where temperature matters. PC tends to cost less, while insulated panels offer more thermal control. Tell us how you'll use the space and we'll recommend the right panel.
Will an aluminum carport rust?
No. Aluminum does not rust the way steel does, which is the main reason we build with it. Steel corrodes when iron oxidizes, but aluminum forms a thin protective oxide layer that resists corrosion, even in coastal or humid climates. That means no rust streaks, no flaking, and far less upkeep over the life of the structure. Our frames also carry a durable powder-coated finish for added protection. It's one of the biggest advantages of aluminum over a traditional steel carport.
Can a patio cover or carport attach to my house?
Yes, many of our structures can be installed as attached units that tie into your home's wall or roofline. An attached design shares one side with the house, which can simplify the build and extend your living space. The right flashing and fastening are critical to keep water out, so attached installs should follow the included instructions and local code. If your wall or roof is unusual, have a licensed contractor confirm the attachment method before you start.
How do I order a custom size?
Most of our structures are made to order, so custom sizing is the norm rather than the exception. Send us your target dimensions along with how you plan to use the space, and our team will confirm what's feasible and prepare a layout for your approval. Because each order is built to your spec, we'll send a design confirmation before anything goes into production. Reach out through our contact page with your measurements and site photos to get started on a custom quote.
What colors and finishes are available?
We offer a range of powder-coated finishes designed to hold up outdoors and resist fading. Popular choices include grey, white, and bronze tones that pair well with most homes and meet common HOA guidelines. Roof panel options vary by model, from clear and tinted polycarbonate to solid insulated panels. Because availability can change by product and run, check the specific product page for current options or contact us to confirm a finish before you order.
How does a solar carport connect to the grid?
Our solar-ready structures are engineered to mount panels, but grid connection is handled on your end. Tying a solar array into your home's electrical system and the utility grid requires a licensed electrician and, in most areas, utility approval and a permit. Net-metering rules and interconnection paperwork vary by state and utility, so we can't promise a specific setup. We'll provide the structural details your installer needs. For electrical and interconnection questions, consult a licensed electrician or contact us.
How many people and how long does installation take?
It depends on the size and model, but our kits are designed to be manageable. Components arrive pre-drilled for a bolt-together assembly, so there's no welding or cutting required. Many smaller units can be assembled by two people over a weekend, while larger structures take longer and benefit from a third set of hands. Your product page and included instructions give a clearer estimate for that model. If you'd rather not DIY, a local contractor can assemble it from the kit.
What are the concrete foundation requirements?
Most carports and patio covers anchor to a concrete slab or footings, which provide a stable, level base and proper drainage. The slab should be fully cured and meet the thickness and footing specs noted in your product instructions, and depth requirements rise in regions with frost. Local code often dictates footing size, so verify the details with your building department before you pour. If you're unsure about your site or soil, have a licensed contractor evaluate the foundation.
Can I install it myself?
Yes. Aluminum is lightweight and our kits ship pre-drilled for a bolt-together build, which makes them friendly for a capable DIYer. There's no welding, and the instructions walk you through each step. That said, you'll want help lifting roof panels and squaring the frame, so plan for at least one extra person. If your install attaches to the house, sits on a tricky site, or needs to meet specific code, hiring a licensed contractor is a smart call.
What tools do I need for installation?
Because the kit arrives pre-drilled, you won't need specialty equipment. A standard set usually covers it: a cordless drill or impact driver, sockets and wrenches for the bolts, a level, a tape measure, a ladder, and a chalk line for layout. A second drill and a few clamps speed things up. Anchoring to concrete also calls for a hammer drill and the right masonry bits. Check your product instructions for the exact fastener sizes and any model-specific tools before you begin.
How long does shipping take and how is it delivered?
Orders over $2,599 ship free. Because each structure is custom-built at our factory, production begins after payment clears and you approve the final design. From there, your order enters the production queue within 1 to 3 business days. Finished structures ship by LTL freight, and you'll receive tracking along with full insurance coverage on the shipment. Freight deliveries are curbside, so plan to help unload. See our shipping information for full details, or contact us for a timeline on your order.
What about customs duties and domestic warehousing?
Our structures are custom-manufactured at our factory and shipped to you, and any applicable duties are accounted for so there are no surprise charges on delivery. Inventory and routing can vary by product and season, and we can't promise a specific warehouse or transit lane for every order. If you need precise details on duties, origin, or stocking for your particular structure, contact us and our team will give you the most accurate answer for your order.
What is your return and exchange policy?
Inspect your shipment carefully on arrival. If a freight delivery looks damaged before you sign, you may refuse it at the curb. Once you sign for and accept delivery, custom-built orders are not returnable, since each one is made to your specifications. If items arrive damaged or don't match your approved order, we'll make it right with a replacement or a full refund. Note any visible damage on the delivery receipt and contact us right away with photos so we can resolve it quickly.
What does the 10-year warranty cover?
Our structures are backed by a 10-year warranty covering the structural integrity of the aluminum frame against defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Coverage excludes damage from misuse, improper installation, alterations, or events beyond the rated loads. Specific terms and any panel coverage can vary by product, so review the details on our warranty page or contact us with your model before purchasing. We stand behind the 10-year coverage and want you to know exactly what's included.
What happens if my shipment is lost in transit?
Every shipment travels fully insured, so a lost order won't leave you out of pocket. If the carrier confirms your shipment is lost, you choose how we make it right: a full refund, or a priority rebuild and reship so you're back on track as fast as possible. Reach out as soon as tracking stalls or the carrier reports an issue, and our team will open a claim and walk you through the options. Contact us right away if you suspect your shipment is lost.
How do I clean and maintain my carport?
Aluminum is close to maintenance-free, which is a big part of its appeal. There's no rust to treat and no annual sealing required. An occasional rinse with a garden hose clears off dust and pollen, and for tougher grime, mild soap and water with a soft brush is plenty. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh solvents that could dull the finish. Clearing leaves and snow from the roof after storms helps it stay in top shape for years with very little effort.
Can I change or cancel my order after purchasing?
Because every structure is custom-built to your specifications, orders cannot be canceled once placed. This is why we send a design confirmation for your approval before production begins, which is your moment to adjust sizing, color, or layout. Review the confirmation carefully and raise any changes before you sign off. Once you approve the design and production starts, the order is locked in. If you have questions before approving, contact us and we'll make sure every detail is right.
