What makes an insulated carport different from a standard polycarbonate one?
An insulated carport roof uses a sandwich panel — two aluminum skins bonded around a foam core — instead of a single polycarbonate sheet. The foam core slows heat transfer, so the space underneath stays noticeably cooler in summer sun and holds temperature better in cold weather. A polycarbonate (PC) roof lets light through and blocks UV, but it does little to stop heat moving through the panel. If you park under your carport in a hot or cold climate, or you want a quieter roof in rain and hail, insulated panels do more work. Will an insulated roof keep my car and gear cooler in summer?
Yes. Because the foam core resists heat transfer, the air and surfaces under an insulated panel run cooler than under a bare metal or single-skin PC roof in direct sun. That means a less brutal cabin temperature when you get in, and a more usable space if you store tools, a workbench, or a grill underneath. It is a roof, not a sealed room, so it will not feel like air conditioning — but the difference against an uninsulated cover is easy to feel on a hot afternoon.
Are the panels solid, or do they let any light through?
Insulated sandwich panels are solid — the aluminum skins are opaque, so the roof does not transmit daylight the way a polycarbonate sheet does. That gives you full shade and a cooler space, with no glare. If keeping natural light under the cover matters more to you than insulation, a polycarbonate roof is the better fit.
